Supreme Fertility

The WHO (World Health Organisation) defines infertility as, “The failure to achieve a clinical pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.” It is a lot more common than you may at first expect, with 1 in 6 couples struggling to conceive. Whose to blame? 1/3 of infertility cases can be linked to the male. 1/3 to the female. 1/3 to both parties.

It is estimated that approximately 50% of infertility cases are caused by genetic issues.

Fertility has always been an area that many practitioners fear to tread, believing that it is an area outside their scope of practice. This Supreme Fertility course will provide you with a background into the potential causes of infertility and provide you with an affordable solution to offer your patients.

Optiway

The WHO (World Health Organisation) estimates that 50% of the world’s population suffer from food intolerances, many of which are food related. Common everyday problems like migraines, aching joints, fatigue, gastrointestinal disorders, eczema, hyperactivity, ADD, ADHD, asthma, and even obesity have been linked to food sensitivity and chronic activation of the immune system. The OptiWay courses will enable you to become skilful at recognising the signs and symptoms of food intolerances and how to manage them.  By eliminating the guesswork involved with identifying the best repertoire of foods / nutrients to suggest, the test offered by OptiWay will support you and strengthen your ability to provide effective therapies to your patients.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who would like to understand food intolerances. However, a basic understanding of the immune system is an advantage.

GENE-Rx™

When it comes to prescribing drugs and evaluating patients for potential drug interactions, pharmacogenetic testing is no longer a future consideration. It is here and it is here to stay.

Pharmacogenetic testing is recommended to aid physicians in determining the most appropriate medication and the right dosages to avoid adverse drug reactions and interactions.

Cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes are responsible for the metabolism of approximately 75% of all drugs. Variations in CYP genes that code for CYP enzymes can predict how a person will metabolize specific drugs. This course describes pharmacogenetics of CYPs and models for clinical implementation. Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the role of drug metabolism in the activation and inactivation of drugs.
  • Explain the nomenclature of cytochrome P450 enzyme phenotypes and genetic variants.
  • List examples of CYPs and drugs with pharmacogenetic associations, and how they would be used to guide drug and dose selection.
  • Describe how genetic testing can predict a drug response phenotype.
  • List examples of drug-gene pairs with clinical decision support.
  • Understand the limitations of pharmacogenetics testing and implementation of gene-based drug and dose selection.

The GENE-Rx course consists of three modules:

Module 1: Principles and Concepts of Pharmacogenomics

Module 2: Clinical Application of Pharmacogenomics

GENEDIET™

This course provides practitioners with in-depth training about Nutritional Genomics. If you are a professional that will make nutritional recommendations to clients, it is critical to understand the relationships between nutrients and genes in order to compile effective personalized nutritional programmes.

Recently, the definition of Nutritional Genomics has been broadened to encompass nutritional factors that protect the genome from damage. Nutrigenetics studies the presence of a particular gene variant that, in most cases, predicts a predisposition to a particular disease process which may be prevented through an interplay of environmental and behavioural factors such as a personalized nutrition. Nutrigenomics refers to the study of the effects of specific nutrients or nutraceuticals on the expression of an individual’s genetic makeup.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Use a selection of in-depth genetic insights to personalise your clients’ nutritional needs and dietary requirements
  • Understand how an overall genetic profile influences the risk of obesity and the key genes involved
  • Explain how nutrients can affect the activity of genes i.e. nutrient regulated gene expression
  • Understand nutritional genomics in the healthcare practice

This course consists of five modules:

Module 1 – Weight Loss
In this module, we look at the benefits to you and the client when doing genetic testing for weight management. It includes factors during weight loss, not just what your client consumes. Several “obesity” genes are discussed including LEPR, FTO, ADRB2 and MC4R as well as exercise responsiveness. This module concludes with a short case study.
Module 2 – Macronutrients
Recommendations for personalized nutrition influenced by genetic results are demonstrated in Module 2. Using the background of previous studies on nutrigenetics and macronutrients, you will understand how to use genetic results to predict the best type of diet for your client.
Module 3 – Micronutrients & Food Sensitivities
Take a closer look at how genetic variations should be used to determine your patients’ optimal micronutrient requirements (versus the RDA recommendations). Nutrient recommendations based on genetics for the following essential nutrients are reviewed: magnesium, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, calcium, iron and fibre. Additionally, the application of genetic variations as biomarkers for gluten, lactose and caffeine sensitivities are explained.
Module 4 – Eating Behaviours
The psychology around eating and factors that influence eating habits are, to a great extent, determined by genetics. In this module, you will start to understand the genes that have a direct impact on eating patterns and behaviours. Some people have genetic variations that particularly affect satiety and hunger. Taste preferences for fats, sweet tastes or bitter flavours are substantially affected by genetic variations. Therefore, this influences the behaviour and compliance of your patients, and subsequently the advice and recommendations you need to provide. Saturated fat sensitivity based on genetic variations is also covered in this module which is of particular importance to clients considering a Banting-type diet.
